As I lay with my head in your lap, Camerado,
The confession I made I resume—what I said to you in the open air I resume:
I know I am restless, and make others so;
I know my words are weapons, full of danger, full of death;
(Indeed I am myself the real soldier;
It is not he, there, with his bayonet, and not the red-striped artilleryman;)
For I confront peace, security, and all the settled laws, to unsettle them;
I am more resolute because all have denied me, than I could ever have been had all accepted me;
I heed not, and have never heeded, either experience, cautions, majorities, nor ridicule;
And the threat of what is call’d hell is little or nothing to me;
And the lure of what is call’d heaven is little or nothing to me;
...Dear camerado! I confess I have urged you onward with me, and still urge you, without the least idea what is our destination,
Or whether we shall be victorious, or utterly quell’d and defeated

The Sopranos is pretty much perfect. It is, however, enjoyable by both "plebs" and "patricians".

It can be enjoyed as a mob-drama by the less-learned, but it really is an all-encompasing work, that tackles themes of identity, society, "american" culture, friendship, family, sexuality, and pretty much everthying else.

It really is amazing. It rewards a careful watch, as there are incredibly many allusions and small details that only a seasoned viewer will catch and understand. It constantly gets better and builds and builds upon itself. I can't do it justice by my puny little explanation. It's perfect, but you have to stick with it. The Pilot is a little strange, and you won't understand the show's genius until midway through season 2.

It has also the best and most complete film or tv character ever crafted. The acting is incredible. Everything is so fucking good.

SaGa Frontier 2 - for aesthetics, Chrono Cross for your daily dose of ephemeralism and solipsism, makes you feel like shit when you start getting towards the end.

Other than that, video games really have shit stories, but offer a unique perspective since you get to see, hear, and most of all - control what happens (to some degree).

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Considering the pretext and the stuff that led to the album being made, it's one of the most complete works of music in a genre that is hip hop, not amazing on its own but seeing how there are literally no "art" rap projects being made ever, Kanye was first to the to the game (not including concept albums like deltron 3030 and stuff like that, just str8 art)

I liked Sopranos, not that much, but I do agree with what >>5183082 said, it needs to be watched like a 30h movie.

Because concept albums tend to focus on a certain thing, with occasional metaphors that pertain to actual life. MBDTF is an album about what it feels like to be at the top of the world in reality, but really rock bottom as a human being, especially in stark contrast to albums such as Graduation, 808s, and even Yeezus.

I could stan all day long about it, and I'm sure others have said it better than me why it's great, but for me it has all the great stuff that concept albums seem to have, and it feels extremely pretentious at times, yet so sincere, it's one of those things you eat and it tastes kinda strange but the aftertaste is what keeps you coming back for more.

Read http://www.amazon.com/Kanye-Wests-Beautiful-Twisted-Fantasy/dp/1623565421/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1406234016&sr=1-1&keywords=my+beautiful+dark+twisted+fantasy if you're really interested, don't be put off by the 1star reviews, the author is pretentious as shit but the facts he lays down are what you really want from this book.

SERIOUS SPOILERS!

Tony Soprano is Kevin Finnerty. They are one.

Kevin Finnerty is a bad man. He committed fraud against innocent people (the monks), but he will not take responsibility. He denies he is a bad man (K. Finn). Take a look at the pic of Kevin in the wallet and he is clearly a mobster-looking guy. He keeps saying that he lost his briefcase or that it was switched up with Kevin's. We come to learn that the briefcase represents his life.

This of course represents his struggle between being a mob leader and a good family man. He is having en extreme identity/existential crisis.

After he is diagnosed with Alzheimers, he starts to wonder if he is in fact Kevin. He eats a grouper sandwich, fish being a symbol of impending death. When he sits alone in his hotel room in pic related, he realizes that he may very well be this horrible, dishonest, and deceiving man. He can no longer call his family as they are not real. They are from a different life.
The monks talk about how after death, we are the same as a tree. No you, no me, just nothing.

He gets an invitation to the Finnerty Family reunion, at the Inn at the OAKS (tree/death/hell). Here he is greeted by his dead cousin, who is the grim reaper in a disguise. Tony/Kevin asks about Finnerty, and he says "we don't talk like that here". No names after death. Tony spots his mother in the window, confirming this place as hell. He gets scared as death tries to take his life (briefcase). Then he gets resuscitated.

Incredible show. Watched for the second time a few months ago, it really is a masterpiece. There's a literary depth about it pratically no other shows has. Except maybe The Wire, which is more on Balzacian/Dickensian side of the spectrum. The Sopranos is more... metaphysical. But the writing itself is perfect.

Perfect show, but hard to stand in the long run. Last season is really painful considering the moral ugliness of pretty much all the characters.

I'd consider myself well read but I've never gotten much into movies or TV. I recently watched Breaking Bad; it was amazing. I've heard many say it is the best that TV has to offer. Are they right?

>> No.5183715

>>5183688
No. But Breaking Bad is good. It is. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

The Sopranos blows it out of the water. As does The Wire and to a degree, Mad Men. Twin Peaks is also better, and in my opinion, so is True Detective.

But every show I have mentioned is very different from Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad has a very focused plot, while The Sopranos and The Wire and Mad Men are about life in general, featuring many characters and sometimes even completely lacking in plot.

Sopranos is elder good tier TV show, but it is not for everyone.

Yeah I'll probably finish it, it's getting a lot more dark so there might be some interesting shift.

I think my main problem is with the characters, I don't seem to find them as fleshed out as the ones in the wire (besides Tony ofc because Gandolfini). There are many arcs that I simply don't care about whereas The Wire had their characters more "integrated" and all of the arcs actually move the story forward, like in good novels

And yeah, the show gets darker as the characters become older and more bitter. And the characters are plenty fleshed out and will be even more so in the following seasons. I think you might be blinded by the supposed greatness of the Wire and you want The Sopranos to be something it isn't.

Please. As a casual anime watcher I can say Eva was good, but really nothing special. The characters were 2-dimensional in every sense of the word, the 'Angels' plotline was too convoluted and 2deep4u and whatever depth the show had it ruined by explicitly stating the flaws of subsequent resolution of every character in the last two episodes.

It was good for anime. That isn't saying much.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is engaging in terms of its plot complexity and strategizing but it's engaging only at that level. What really enthralls me about movies and animation are their oneiric quality, the ability to bend reality in those slight amazing ways. Noir for example with its dark chiaroscuro and semi-surreal postmodern things like Synecdoche New York are to me the best shit in the world. Same goes for Orson Welles' The Trial, Kubrick's Clockwork Orange, Terry Gilliam's Brazil, the opening dream of Fellini's 8.5, Tarkovsky's Stalker and Chris Marker's amazing documentary San Soleil.

To me though animation is really projecting the pure stuff of dreams in film format. Evangelion reminded me of Artaud's description of the Plague in The Theater and its Double and his comparison of the event of a massive plague to theater. It also reminded me of his description of the play's 'shadow'. On the other side Madoka Magica was really just the stuff of dreams. The bus ride scene in it is pretty much the most enchanting and magical thing that I have seen on film, even more so than anything Miyazaki or Disney could pull. It brimmed with the essence of Goethe's play, with all its magic and spirits and hauntings. Almost every shot in that film has basically been etched into my visual library.
