If you really want to watch or read material with smart-think you should stick to documentaries and non-fiction: anything with a basis in reality is going to be able to discuss intelligent concepts better than a work set in fiction.

I agree with OP but lets face it, all we ever get of someone else's experience is but a brief glimpse. We view everyone as an extension of our own experience, not the other way around. Non-Fiction writing (and all writing for that matter), is plagued by the exact same thing. Our self absorbed nature only allows us to take from literature the things we find relate best to our own experiences. While its true that some books furthers our own ideas and beliefs it doesn't change the fact you cant be emotionally invested in something you don't care about. People don't usually care about parts of history that they don't feel connect to there own experience therefore all literature falls prey to the same predator, our self absorption. Thats why fiction and non fiction are on the same level, because some people feel more connected to the experiences of fictional characters then real ones.

As sad as that is
