Are people this naive? People don't respect memoir . They respect novels. People respect when you take your experiences and create stories out of them, not write about them directly. When I'm looking for an artist of notable skill I don't look to people who write memoirs about their experiences.

Also people are critical because Laurie Penny is the type of person who just lives to get mad at people not following her way of life. She is the type of girl to just look for people to call out and scorn.

But more to the point: yes, HST was a better writer than Laurie Penny, so? Name one currently working journalist whose prose is on HST's level. I can't.

Moreover, they're up to very different things. A better point of comparison would be to an early-career Hitchens. Polemicists, critics, weaponized writers in the tradition of British journalism. It's been a while since I've read early Hitchens, but I don't think Penny would come up so wanting at all.

Am I the only one who finds it sort of odd how focused feminist websites, blogs, etc. are on pop culture? It makes sense that a feminist would take issue with how popular media presents women but it seems like the MAJORITY of popular feminist critique is done through discussing/highlight pop culture nonsense. I mean, the media and pop culture play a role in economic oppression/discrimination, and socialist certainly will talk about it, but there's not such a preponderance of it. Nor is there among race activists, really. Any interest group dealing with perceived "injustices" could equally be concerned with popular culture as it affects the way people think but the overwhelming focus on pop culture really seems unique to feminism.
