I mean, I view extreme music as a conduit for aggression. When I was younger, I had frenzies of rage, but then I started listening to extreme music and was able to just work out my wrath in my imagination.

Metal is the most transgressive and diverse of all music genres.

Look at the way metal transgresses on the morality of conservative, white, catholic Americans. It is blatant, in-your-face, aggressive, and in certain sub-genres, Satanic. It is fundamentally anti-republithug and revolutionary.

Look at how diverse Metal is compared to all music genres. The only genre of music that matches the diversity, intensity, and intellectual output is maybe Classical music. But metal simplifies itself down like a mathematical theory, making it on par with classical music in rhythm, harmony, and other attributes even though it lacks an orchestra.

You'll always get flamed for making comparisons, but I agree with you that metal is intellectually rich. Though much of it is completely subversive, atheistic, etc... by and large, one of the most prevalent themes of metal is strength of character. I mean, to even go on stage and play metal to the public says something about a person.

Metal is definitely a form of guitar music/rock n' roll... I see it as the logical conclusion of the typical five-piece rock band. More like a reductio ad absurdum.

Now, progressive metal has pushed far, far away from traditional 4/4 rock structure and into the abstruse mathematical realm, like you pointed out. Meshuggah pretty much changed the game forever that way. Guitars are being tuned lower and lower to share the same spectral space as the kicks and bass, and riffs are starting to syncopate accordingly. Quick, trashy stacks of china cymbals keep the count while the kicks and snares play in polyrhythms. Since there's the ability to create ridiculously heavy grooves with nothing but the 7 or 8-string guitars and strong drummers, there is more space for atmosphere in synthesizers, effects, vocals. That's what you see happening with bands like Periphery, TesseracT, The Contortionist, etc.

What comes next will be the logical extreme of that style, and something new will happen.

not really. there are notes, chord progressions, etc.

That's not to say I don't like "With Teeth". It's a slicker album than addict-Trent, and its lyrics are edgy (as ever), but it's got some good shit. The last two songs (beside you in time/right where it belongs) speak beautifully and fade into nothing. The Collector, You Know What You Are? are cool. He got very dystopian. I've felt With Teeth to be a pre-concept album, if not one, which lead to the obviously concept album "Year Zero". That was an interesting time, with the Iraq War in full swing.

America was into some fevered shit. Mediocre protest music left and right. Still, I was caught.

I just like the NIN who could produce a single and then something like "Pilgrimage". Those rambling albums where songs bleed and smear.

Also, fuck song 7 on this new album, "Everything". eh....
