Okay folks, I require some assistance. I, and a number of other individuals, are constructing a series of short novels which will describe the rise and eventual desolation of a handful of clans/city-states.
We have spent a number of years going over ideas. Years of reading all 'em 'classical' novels which pertain to our period (510BCE and on-wards). Years of going over possible geographies, and marking specific expansions of said clans/city-states within said geography. Years of constructing time-lines and making sure we stamp out possible plot-holes. Albeit, we remain in the early stages yet, merely collecting as much info as possible. We wish for these works to detail said period, and events as realistically as possible. This has been posted in numerous boards which pertain to said topic and whatnot. Anyhow: Said tale will follow a Gothic/Visigothic/Ostrogothic-like handful. Migration and expansion is a huge part (Issues that would arise, diseases that were life-threatening during said period, especially in the region of Germania). Political situation of said clans, preferably the steps as to how a clan is formed to begin with. Food, the 'fashion' of said people, phrases and how they spoke, etc. I will try to answer as many questions as possible. Thank you for your help.

It's stated why if you bother to read through the whole thing.

Seens to be an interesting project. But you should probably explain if you're looking for more people to join that team, google results on life in former city-states or specific (book?) recommendations.

Also I'd be interested on your view on modern city states in the future - ie would metropolization and protection from larger entities (ie countries) be a problem that would make that impossible?

So far we're looking at getting our hands on Getica. If you have any recommendations it would be much appreciated. Most folks are assuming that we're constructing a semi-fictional account of the Goths, we're not. The Goths are an inspiration for said work.

Oh, Prometheus!

What fire have you to gift us with; what Olympus have you to offend?

Prometheus is our first and foremost paladin.
Gods give exactly zero fuck to humans, were it left to them, we'd be eating bones and skin. Prometheus gave us meat. He gave us fire to light our nights. Based bro of humanity 10/10

It is still difficult to know what you want. You are using the Goths as your inspiration but basing it about 1000 years before their main time. First of all you should know that the simple ideas of large people movements during the migration period in european history is challenged these days. It is very much a 19th century notion, fed from nationalism, that large distinct tribes moved and took over areas. Sometimes that happened but just as often smaller groups spread their influence and ideas causing people already there to assimilate the ideas becoming gothicised or romanised through a cultural osmosis. Also the Goths didn't really live in city states. if you want to get an idea of this in respect of the goths try Peter Heather - The Goths or Michael Kulikowski - Rome's Gothic Wars

This is pretty much what I wanted. Responses like this. Thank you for not being 'Le Master Troll'. The whole aspect of city-states is that said clans would eventually evolve over time. Said novels will pretty much be consider 'Dark Fantasy', only difference is that the aspect of 'magic' will be stripped. A narrative which will pretty much follow fictional clans.

I suppose the fault is my own as to how I worded this whole thing.

well if your work is fantasy, albeit realistic fantasy, you can pretty much write it how you like. We can say that they didn't have the stirrup or the potato back then but if you want to put that in what is to stop you. Did you know the Goths wore trousers and the romans thought they were pussies for that, not wearing skirts and togas like real men. When Gothic people started moving into the Italian peninsula trousers were banned in Rome to keep goths out. Interesting fact but would only loosely apply to your world building I would think.
