I spent the last five hours on goodreads (which I've determined to be an incredibly unhelpful site) and I haven't been able to find a single book that I like. I went through the sticky, didn't see anything I wanted to read. Some of my favorite films are Lawrence of Arabia and The Wind Rises, that should give you an idea.

I want a fictional book about a journey that doesn't feature some middle-class American bitch writing about how she decided to travel across Asia due to divorce and menopause.

You don't know how infuriating it is to not find any books to read. Help me.

Thanks for trying, though. Every time I try to get into books again, I'm infuriated by the whole thing.

Lolita has a 3.8 average on goodreads, while the Twilight Saga has a 3.9

That should give you an idea of what to expect from their community

What about books infuriates you? Seriously start with Blood Meridian, everyone loves it and its not boring at all.

why does it need to be fictional?
also stop being so angry srsly, it's not the world's fault you have a tonne of pent-up resentment seemingly manifesting itself into arbitrary rules regarding what you're prepared to read

I've tried for about five years now, again and again to get into books. I've read (not necessarily completed) The Catcher in the Rye, (didn't care for) The Great Gatsby (hated it) The Hobbit (disliked) some other shit, I think Searching for Alaska, awful typical American teenage bullshit, New York (historical novel, finished it, hated it) and some other stuff. I keep on trying to get into books but it just doesn't work.
>>5108599
I just have a hard time finding books that I like at all. I love films. It's odd because I've never had a hard time with words or my vocabulary. I'm also very patient.

It has to be fictional because non-fictional is non-fictional. Fantastical things aren't allowed to happen.

>High brow and ultraviolent.

the worst combination for any art. ultraviolence cheapens the experience. high brow implies lack of humbleness which too makes it for an underwhelming reading experience. People can tell when an author thinks highly of himself and it ruins the art.

The Border Trilogy, especially the first two. They're quintessential western epics in which the protagonists go on long journeys in Mexico.

OP here, I don't know what I expected or what's wrong with me. I feel very weird and miserable tonight. My stomach feels a little sick and it's as though the world is shrinking around me. Absolutely miserable. I'm packing it in and am going to attempt sleeping.

Thanks for trying to help.

Your problem is paradox of choice. Just choose a book and read the first 50 pages or so. If you like it, great. If not, start a new one.

Use a library or used book store.

Alternatively, why not just spend the time watching more films? Film is just as rich an artform as literature, and there's plenty to watch.

I can't believe no one's said it: Seven Pillars of Wisdom - T.E. Lawrence.

The man fucking wrote a serious, talked-about book.

2 good responses. Read both in high school.

Candide isn't long, but it's hilarious and good. Voltaire can play with words. Or his translator.
