Thoughts on Bukowski?

A poem for Bukowski:

At twenty, I loved
Bukowski. I get him now
and just drink instead.

>> No.5106306

He's no Joyce but he's got his place.

>> No.5106308

He's the sort of writer everyone on 4chan would love if they were born pre-internet.
Everyone here is used to the edginess he is known for, so there isn't really the shock value that made his writing distinguishable.

That being said, he's probably the most copied American writer today (maybe with the exception of Hemingway).

Don't know. My first Bukowski novel is arriving in a couple of days, so we'll see. I like bluebird though.

>> No.5106343

hes the 4chan version of hemingway

>> No.5106370

I like that story when two guys get drunk on cheap booze, steal a dead woman from the morgue and fuck the corpse repeatedly. Then he gets all lyrical when they bring her freshly semen-stained body to the sea and send her out to swim.

He's a very good writer.

He's an old unhappy alcoholic.

That's all.

Read enough to get him then put him down.

I still listen to a poem or two of his every now and again.

He drank too long from the gutter.

Bukowski is a no-talent hack.

[insert author here] is a no-talent hack.

You could literally do that to anyone who has ever written anything.

>> No.5106649

Love him. Got me into serious reading and into writing: if this unhappy, working-class dude could have a go then why shouldnt I? (He has limited influence on "my style" however).

his books are about triumph and endurance, he lived an incredibly shitty life and still took to his passion like it was a religion. I guess having a shitty job, having suffered bad skin and growing disillusioned as you grow old is something I personally connect with. Im not saying hes the bees knees of writing because he is the offspring of Fante and Hemmmmmingway, but it has a universal appeal and some of his writing is quite emotional, his poems more so.

tl;dr - hes great if you take him for what he is

I just finished Ham on Rye and the last thirty pages of the book were magic. I really felt the hopelessness of World War II's start and the hopelessness of being thrust into a world that literally doesn't give two shits if you live or die.

"What a great triumph it would have been. Kissing that lisp, working those fine legs open, as Hitler swallowed up Europe and peered toward London."

That being said I didn't care for Postal Office.

Started reading him in the late 70's.
Liked his prose and stories but not his poetry.
Just bought a book of his poetry 2 days ago (and one of Billy Collins stuff) and I like his poems.
Buk has a great American voice.

>> No.5106681

I don't read much poetry, largely because very little of it can compare to Bukowski.

Love his behavior, doesn't give a fuck about peer pressure; just the opposite of /lit/.

Can't you just no fucks about /lit/ ?
This is 4chan they are anonymous and probably do so much stupid shit in their private lives that would make a retarded monkey look smart.

>> No.5106831

He's more articulate than your average drunken hedonist.

His poems are instantly accessible, and I think that's the secret of his appeal. You don't have to be an English major to understand what he's talking about- it's all right there on the surface.

He is a good writer who chose to write about bullshit.

>> No.5107606

I'm of two minds with him, I'm not sure if I like or dislike him.

However, if I do dislike him, it's not because of what /lit/ usually criticizes him for, ie being a drunk and ''romanticizing'' the bohemian lifestyle. That's just terrible empty criticism.
