Great town, great school. It's not like Harvard or anything but it's better than most, I'd say. It's in the Bible Belt but Chapel Hill is a really liberal place, which is refreshing. Indoctrination only happens to you if you let it happen to you. Now, more than ever, students think critically and call dubious points into question. If an educator was out to indoctrinate students, I think they'd have a hard row to hoe in modern academia.

I mean, teachers in high school get called out for teaching evolution--and that shit is actually true with tons of factual evidence backing it up. Just imagine how difficult it would be for them if they tried to teach beliefs that had no facts behind them.

It may not be the best possible world to go into so much debt, but a degree in anything gives you an edge over all the people who shunned college because of the debt. I get paid far more than all my friends who opted not to go to college (also do far less work at my job), and although I've still got some debt to pay off, I still make payments and still make more money than I would have if I didn't get a degree.

If I had to choose between debt + high wage for the rest of my life and no debt + low wage for most of my life, I'll gladly take the debt.

math is basically the same deal, teachers generally know what they're doing, some of them are some grade a hardasses (walsh, i think young), and it won't be kind to your gpa, but you'll learn

There are reasons to get an MA before a PhD other than being shitty at philosophy. Also, if you're shitty, an MA program isn't going to accept you. Lot's of people get MAs if they came from a relatively unknown undergrad institution (like myself), if they don't have enough of an idea of what they specifically want to do yet, if they don't have enough of a general background (people who come from other undergrad departments will often do this), in order to gain an edge in PhD program applications that they might not have otherwise done well in. In other words, there are a lot of good reasons to get an MA and it's still irrelevant to whether or not what I said about other departments is true.

Its not a truly great school but it's cheap for the quality, and makes law school a possibility.

Cavell is actually pretty good with continental philosophers. Even among analytics he's something of a black sheep. Then again I can't imagine the average harvard grad student being very receptive

Breezed through my classes, really pretentious classmates, poorly managed. The dorms are dilapidated and admissions/academics standards are low.

I used a foxfire book to build my own cabin. It's in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and I don't know if it's private property or not. If I were you, I'd go to some place down south where there's a lot of mountains and woodlands, say Kentucky or Virginia, where it doesn't get too cold in the winter, build a cabin a couple of miles from town, and learn how to kill and cook. Alright, that's assuring. I was really worried about making the right choice because I wasn't too familiar with the student bodies of the schools I was looking at.

Right now, I'm planning on double majoring in History and Japanese, but that's liable to change. As for my general interests, I like to read literature, philosophy, and psychology, and watch movies as well. I used to browse /lit/ a lot more frequently but took a break because it was taking up too much of my free time. Yesterday I just got on because I was bored, saw this thread, and posted.

Good choices. I'm studying abroad in Japan this fall. The department is wonderful. Really glad to see more people with similar interests coming. One thing I've been trying to do for awhile is start a really good film club. We have one, and they show decent films, but meet too infrequently, like once a month. And I'm a total film junkie so this is not enough for me.
