It was still being written when I had caught up to the last book at the time.
You're right though, having gone back and read through some of them again, they're pretty shit.

I liked it but looking back the narrative was so fucked... Seriously I know it was supposed to be a journal he kept but the story was so disjointed and muddled sometimes it was hard to tell what the fuck was happening and why

You know, I loved the Belgariad as a kid, but I tried to read the Mallorean a couple of years ago and I had to give up after a couple of books. I first read the Belgariad before I'd read much fantasy, and now all of the tropes and cliches just seem so obvious and hackneyed that I can't enjoy it.

I don't mean to demean David Eddings' work. He did an excellent job of taking all the standard fantasy stuff and packaging it up into an engaging series. It just seems like something that can only be properly enjoyed by someone who hasn't read much similar work. I've considered trying to go back and reread some of the Belgariad, but I'm worried that I'll hate it and I don't want to ruin my childhood memories.

I understand completely. Most of Eddings' plots are really paper-thin and awfully pedestrian, especially for anyone who's read more than a handful of fantasy books these days. I mean the entire plot of the Belgariad surrounds how Garion is some chosen kid from some prophecy and he's destined to save the world.

As a kid they were wonderful adventures. As an adult now it's hard to appreciate the plot, but the one thing Eddings really nails is his characters. His characterization is pretty top notch and they've all got great personalities that bring them to life. Plus his writing style is just descriptive enough without being overly wordy that it makes reading his stuff a real comfort.

Then again, it could all just be nostalgia, I'll admit.

I've read quite a lot of fantasy, but I still find Eddings work to be charming and satisfying, though not masterful. The Belgariad is like a cup of hot tea sipped at the end of a long day. You've tasted that blend dozens of times before, it's nothing new, but it still brings you pleasure.
It seems to me that the Belgariad was written with the aim to create a piece of work that is well-done *because* of its familiarity, rather than in spite of it. It's a story that doesn't pretend it is the best of its kind, or the most epic, and that sense of honesty is refreshing in the fantasy genre.

Fuck yeah, the the bartimaeus trilogy was amazing. I loved the dry comments of bartimaeus in the footnotes. Also in general I feel the characters were pretty fleshed out compared to other teen fantasy books.

The Shannara books, especially the Jerle Shannara. I liked airships.

I also read the Dhampir series by Barb Hendee, because Buffy was still airing at the time and I liked the whole comedy vampire thing.

Eddings pretty much wrote it because he was fresh out of college and he wanted to use the tropes in fantasy not in a new or different way, but in a way that celebrated them. It's not about the destination, but the journey with those books. It's a foregone conclusion what will happen, ie Garion is the child of a prophecy, Ce'Nedra is going to be his wife, etc but it's how you get to see those things happen that's fun. The character moments that make you love seeing those tropes show up (Fucking Mandorellan choking out a lion was the best).
