Sailor

Or Sun and Steel if you're into vitalism and lifting heavy things

He's pretty much a stuck-in-the-closet edgelord, and not a greater writer, despite the fact that the undeserved sense of superiority held by most of his protagonists tends to resonate with /lit/ posters.

>being vacuously contrarian to feign superiority

K-Kill yourself anon

it's a pretty common and pretty recent opinion here on /lit/ so it's not very contrarian and anon's actually right about the protagonist thing

I've only read Sun and Steel by him, but just from that I find him one of the greatest writers I have read. His style is rich and unique, it's amazing how his complexity seems so natural. Never I have found such a unity of the worship of physical and abstract, complimentary and opposed, a beauty derived from their struggle. It is verging on ascetic to not do yourself the favor of reading that work.

The first one.

Confessions of a Mask is as good a starting point as any, but I found Temple of the Golden Pavilion a pretty good introduction to all things Mishima.

Does anyone know if there's a hope in hell of the last few remaining Mishima novels ever being translated (let alone the other stuff)? Seems kind of crazy no one would try. Are the rights being held hostage for silly $$$ by someone or something?

It doesn't matter if it's a widely held opinion, it can still be contrarian.

>hurr you just like that book because you can relate to the protagonist

I'm seconding this...I've read probably all his translated works and I found The Temple of the Golden Pavilion to be a more complete introduction to Mishima and his motives, his styke and interests.
Make no Mistake, Confessions of a Mask is excellent but it goes to some weird personal corners of Mishima because of it's autobiographical qualities.

It's his family thats blocking it because of teh gey aspects which they try to downplay in the public as much as possible due to possibly his right-wing ties and adoration.

First book I read by him was Spring Snow, and I loved it. Kind of typical tale of forbidden love, but the way it was written...I dunno, made it really special. Since then I've read Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which was great but which I didn't like as much as Spring Snow, and now I'm reading Sound of Waves.

Pretty gr8 writer.
