I can't finish this. Every time I try reading it I get so grossed out that I basically stop eating. I heard it was gross and stuff but DAMN even I, a 4chan "veteran" who thinks they have seen it all just can't do it. Macaulay is great, but if it's your first reading, I strongly urge you to get the Landmark edition (you should be able to check it our from the library), which is loaded with deliciously readable footnotes, maps throughout which show exactly where every city and settlement and nation was, photographs of the monuments and artifacts talked about, and a healthy appendix. Once you've gone through that, then you can much more easily enjoy any other translation.

This is my approach to all classical works: start with the abundantly clear translation, then move onto the more advanced. With Herodotus it is particularly useful, and I guarantee it will bolster your pleasure. And again, yes, Macaulay is splendid, a go-to translation, but far better after having thoroughly familiarized yourself with the text as a beginner,

The structure of it seemed really similar to me. Clay and Holden both seem like they can't fit into society because they're too naive and don't want to accept reality. Both books are mostly just the protagonist wandering around asking questions about life and being constantly disillusioned by the answers. I think if Holden lived in Clay's world, he would behave in a very similar manner.

I'm not so sure. He tries to act like he does, but he seems a lot more depressed and out of place than all of his friends. When everyone else is laughing and talking and enjoying their lifestyle, he's just sort of off to the side feeling empty. He can't even bring himself to watch the snuff film that all his friends find arousing, and he tries to tell Rip that raping the young girl is wrong. He seems to be the only one who tries to find some deeper meaning to life.

I liked the Dark Tower series, but I was always a little disappointed with it because I expected it to just be about a gunslinger going on a journey from town to town.
