I need your help, /lit/.

Firstly, would I be wasting my time studying the German language from a book published prior to the German orthography reform of 1996? Secondly, I need help finding a book for studying German that is appropriate for beginners. I remember having a book similar to "Jenney's First Year Latin," but for people just starting to learn German.

If you are learning German to know how to speak the language I would read a more current book. If you are learning German to read German I would read from your current book first and move on to a more current one.

Thank you. I am looking to learn how to read German, but I just need to be able to properly speak it right now.

Judging from the way you word your questions you are an American who does not and will never speak any foreignese at an acceptable level. If you actually intended to learn German you would be doing it right now instead of asking silly questions.

«Eine Teutsche Grammatica» of 1517 by Valentin Ickesamer would do just as well as any other book on the German language.

I read the german translation of American Books.
I have read five books in that way now and plan on continuing to do so.
I presume my german is improving.

Any recommendations for German language education books/courses?

I'm taking the only beginner German language course available at my university, and it assumes a holistic, conversational approach based on the Schritte International course. Grammar instruction is really rare, and we're basically being taught whole phrases as units, rather than actually understanding how anything works under the surface. This is fine and all, but I really prefer to start from nuts and bolts, and especially to read a hell of a lot more.

I was just gonna start using a random course I found at a garage sale (Deutsch Fur Alle, I think), but I figured I should ask here first. Anyone know of particularly good or rigorous grammar-based approaches?

Die neue Rechtschreibung: not even once.

It was a bloodbath. Many Eszett gave their lives.

I honour their sacrifice by adhering to transgressive orthography until my dying day. day I die.

Gott mit uns.
