Why would you read a book by a mentally ill person? Don't you know you're etching their diseased thoughts into your own mind?

Okay, but I find it odd that this issue is never addressed. I mean, if you read David Foster Wallace, you'll have "don't worry what people think about you--they don't" burned into your brain as some profound insight when, in fact, it might not be all that accurate.

Do you ever wonder about the impact that reading thoughts from poets and authors who an heroed at 30 are having on you?

I would like to think that even if they are having some negative influence on me, that I would be able to identify it and overcome it. Maybe that's just delusional. But I do feel that writers who have gone through a certain amount of suffering have more interesting things to say about the human condition, even if it leads to their suicide.

I think part of the problem has to do with society's definition of "mental illness". Of course someone going through depression who wants to seek help should be able to do so. But what if that depression comes about from having recognized some universal truth? Is the primary mode of human life to suffer, and therefore most of society is just deluding itself? Even if the answer is "no", the question shouldn't be avoided by trying to shut out the thoughts of the mentally ill.

Because it gives you a doorway into their mind.

You can see the world through their eyes
