Hi /lit/

If I'm interested in majoring in Economics what are some good primer books before I head off to college?

I already studied up the basics (fundamentals of feudalism, socialism, capitalism, etc.) down to head terms and their definitions, but otherwise I have yet to engulf myself in the must-reads. And yes, I want to be as eclectic as possible, I'm not partial to laissez-faire or its antitheses. Thank you in advance.

Read Krugman's shit for an easy-to-digest intro to contemporary Keynesian thought.

First of all I would recommend brushing up your math!
Apart from that, I would suggest reading the classics:

Marx
Weber
Smith
Mill
Durkheim

It's nice to read those, but they're not gonna help at all in college.

All the economics students I know have not looked into Marx one bit.

Still OP, whatever they tell you, economics is one of the most heavily politicized fields of study there is and there are tons of problems with its methodology. Unlike science, it's difficult to properly empirically test something because there are so many variables.

There's also not a lot of emphasis on economic history. If you want to do well, just study whatever theorists and methods they give you (which I assume will be mostly Neo-liberal and Austrian, with a few Keynesian economists).

I would suggest you look into heterodox economists on the side of your studies, it won't help you directly but it may aid you sometime in future.

Also, /biz/ might have some advice for you.

>>4905637
That's why they haven't looked into Marx. The spectrum is Keynes to Austrian, and anything outside that isn't 'common sense' enough right now.

More like from neokeynesians to new classicals. Austrians aren't orthodox and their epistemology is antiscientific, you won't see much of them in college. Real keynesianism isn't microfounded so there's not a lot of that either.

I don't think i've seen an insightful post by a poltard ever. Their "understanding" of economics is basically blaming jews, explaining development through race, or repeating some austrian blog. The economic knowledge of the average poltard is simply nonexistent.

Even the libertarians as much as they love to harp on about economics don't know that much about it bar the economists who are especially influential on their ideology.

It does seem like what you really ought to study is sociology, OP. That's where you'll do Marx and Weber and all the interesting stuff about the origins of capitalist ideology and the politics of representation.

Most economy courses will be training to become a wanker banker. You'll be far more employable having studied economics, but in general I'd prefer to have a coffee with someone who has studied social-political science or philosophy.

Hey OP, I'm a historian of social and economic thought. If you want to study for heterodox economics like historical or institutional economics, you should probably major in history. With that said, however, it won't make you nearly (if at all) competitive in the financial or economic field.
