Except you're not supposed to think Gatsby is great. You're not supposed to think anyone in the book is great. Nick is probably the only character that was supposed to even approach being likeable, and maybe George Wilson too. How do you faggots miss the point this hard?

The Great Gatsby will never be successfully adapted to film. The book is famous for its prose, but that doesn't translate well to spoken lines. There is heavy internal monologue, and that doesn't translate well to film. None of it is particularily filmable: there are no action sequences, and dozens of moments of inaudible introspection separating them. The ending isn't happy, and even though it is tragedy, it's anticlimax: Gatsby;'s dead, everything was pointless including his death, BOATS AGAINST THE WIND AMIRITE GUYS?

It'll never be filmed successfully.

Yeah you don't get it. I don't have the text in front of me, but it's Gatsby who see's these symbols and puts weight into them, not Nick. Nick believes that this is ultimately Gatsby's downfall. Maybe if you studied it past an 11th grade level you'd get more out of it?

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . .

The "believed" is the important part.
