This site might be interesting to you. There are many writing systems. Personally, I've always liked Devanagari, but I think Arabic wins. At least when it's written artistically.

I'm having trouble parsing what you are saying. Religion was an important influence on the artwork and calligraphy of Islam. True depictions of the Prophet Muhammad are forbidden or whatever, but they still could write his name beautifully. If anything the religious influence overpowers nonreligious art, but I don't know enough about Islamic culture to make that claim.

I am Hungarian but I have learned Russian a while ago. Basically I can read anything (I can't really speak, as far as I have seen colloquial Russian is another language compared to the 'official', school-taught one), I just finished reading Notes from Underground and the alphabet is still gorgeous to me. I'm learning Burmese now. They sell books that are just pages and pages of traceable circles to practise the writing.

The script comes from Mon, which is part of the Mon Khmer language family. Burmese is completly different, coming from the Tibeto-Burman family.
