I don't get it. Just because people sometimes self-publish bad books, nobody should ever do it? Mind you that many bad books are published by actual publishers.

Not new. There's often a thread making fun of self-publishing. That's silly.

It's a world in which creative types can bypass stiff contracts and maintain creative control by self-publishing.

This goes for music too. A young musician with a little gear can record an entire album in their bedroom and sell it online. No need to have CDs made, worry about distribution and all that...

Sure, for a book, it's not as nice to be without the hard copy, but it's an easy in for a young author to self-publish.

We should be publishing our stuff to our websites instead of making fun of people who do this.

>creative types can bypass stiff contracts and maintain creative control by self-publishing.

Publishing contracts aren't really that binding, aside from the literal sense. Publishing contracts are more so about maintaining rights and advances.

What do you mean by "maintain creative control?" It's not like publishers wrestle the story out from your hands and change it into a completely different story.

Getting an editor is one of the perks to being published. The editor can make suggestions but they can't really force you to do anything you don't want. Unless you're an idiot and signed a contract that said "we can change your manuscript however you want and you can't do anything about it."

the problem with the text is that it's an info dump, a very boring, vague info dump. Telling us "the city has a social economic structure that is both Victorian and modern" tells us nothing. Is there a queen? Is it a democracy? Is there an industrial revolution going on? Is there a computer boom? Is it an empire or is it just spying on everyone while doing shady back door military operations?

Oh wait, there's a nobility and indoor plumbing. Who the fuck cares? Unless this story is about a plumber or spends an unusual amount of time in the bathroom this piece of information is useless. This is an author so obsessed with their own world building that they're just mentioning off-handedly that they have toilets, which I doubt matters because I think it's unlikely the author is going to describe Scythe Arkenlight taking a shit on her steampunk toilet.

The vampire bit is useless because we all know what a vampire is. Telling us that there are vampires is just removing a possible element of surprise from the book. And then the author tells us that these are totally new, different vampires. Vampires generally change from book to book, you don't need to tell us that you, the author, have creative freedom to what sort of vampires are going to be in the book, you're the fucking author, it's a given.

All this bullshit packaged in a holier-than-thou voice makes it extra cringe-worthy. I thought that all this was obvious, since I assumed people on /lit/ are generally accustomed to reading books that don't read like they were made by a pretentious nine year old. But if we can't enjoy this shit at face value, I suppose I could explain why it's so bad for the slow-witted.

And here is a picture of a face because this is an image board.
