I am undecided by the language I should learn, which is either FRENCH or GERMAN(and maybe Italian).

Which one is better and has more works written with it? I am not just going for the basics that may impress a regular ear, I will attempt to learn it fluent, so take in consideration all the looming authors.

How about instead of wasting your time, you study the language of the universe:
>Mathematics

Followed by a course in an anthropocentric dialect
>STEM

you're probably too old to properly learn a language now, and the fact you're still undecided about which language you should learn shows that you'll give up pretty quickly if you do try.

German. People will fear and respect you.

All three of them.

If you're in it for the philosophy: German
If you're in it for the literature: French

Read La Divina Commedia in the original Italian.

I know both some French and a plenty of German. What language is native to you, OP? What are you from? If it is «only English» and «North America» you should save time for stuffing your face with more hamburgers.

We're assuming OP has a 3 digit IQ. I'm 26 and recently took up Dutch.

No offense but why do you want to learn dutch? It's cool and everything, just an unusual decision.

qt Dutch gf. We plan on moving to Holland together after. I also speak English and german very well, which makes Dutch a really easy language to learn for me.

French has better works. You should learn Spanish instead though.

You're the only one who can answer that question. But if you get more specific about what you want, we might be able to help you.

>Which one is better and has more works written with it?

They're probably on even grounds (it's impossible to really assess, anyway). I'd say: learn French because it will probably be easier, and there are plenty of cool authors to read. Then learn German. Consider French a training for German, if you will. The more languages you learn, the easier it gets (if you do it right).

German without a doubt. Read Kant, schopenhauer, Heidegger, Hegel, Nietzsche in german is much easier to understand.

Learning italian is pretty worthless unless you want to go to Italy, which is pretty worthwhile.

Dutch is really just a dialect of German, you shouldnt have any problems.

I'll take the bait. A friend of my dad took up German in his late 30s, wound up moving there, and understands the language better than most Germans.

OP, learn Italian.

What is that even supposed to mean. That most germans don't understand german correctly?

>> No.4765666

To put it in to terms you might understand, think of Joseph Conrad, who learned English as a second language. He understood English better than most Americans.

>> No.4765874

Don't learn Italian unless you have an especial interest in Italian culture. It is not as practical as French or German, and there's far less worthwhile Italian literature.

Nederlands is a badass and thoroughly underrated academic language. As a Near-East studies major, I've been pleasantly surprised by the sheer volume of top-notch Dutch-language research in Iranology, Assyriology, Islamic studies and Classics to come out of the Low Countries.

While most eventually gets translated to either French, English or German, I'm seriously considering studying it to acquire a reading proficiency.
