Brutalism can look cool, the issue largely is that concrete as a material ages largely like complete shit.

My tastes are pretty stereotypical: Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Constructivism.

I actually have a soft spot for Stalinism as well. It's just so fucking blingy like classical, but not to gods, but to the awesomeness of humans.

I think a roman villa would be the comfiest place to live in, with some modern modifications.

Indoor garden with thatched galleries, fountain or pool in the middle. I fell in love with the design from Pompeii.

Of course it only works in warmish countries.

The difference is probably that real life eco-friendly buildings have to actually be eco-friendly instead of just needing to look futuristic.

I'd disagree that the Anno building look any kind of good though, and I'd be interested to see what sort of buildings are your reference point for extant eco-friendly buildings. The image that I get is expansive, architected rural residences that sit naturally in their environments an have huge sun-facing sides that let in all the sun and all the outside they can.

I don't know of anything like an apartment complex that purports to be eco-friendly and doesn't look like just another new apartment complex.

I hope you appreciate the fact that your inability to appreciate someone who is widely regarded as the most accomplished and most sincere architect of the last two centuries puts you on shaky ground to even express an opinion, but assuming you do recognize that...

I promise you it looks much better in person. The Sagrada Familia actually made me feel sick and upset when I saw it in pictures, until I had seen it up close. There's just too much going on, too much detail and dimensionality, to really express in a 2D projection. That's why it ends up looking chaotic and dirty.

I some ways, Pompeii was very relatable--that familiar shock of realizing that millions of people shared lifestyles similar to ours thousands of years ago--but in other ways, it was eye-openingly primitive. The more I learn about it, the more the entire Roman Civilization begins to sound like a sham, a flimsy stage play. As if they were really just peasant farmers who had discovered the miracle of self-aggrandizing mythology.

Of all of Pompeii's houses, only two or three are grand. Those grand houses could only function thanks to the constant upkeep of hundreds of slaves and freedmen. If I could witness the Romans living at their height, as they were in 79 AD, I think I might even laugh at how silly they seem.
