Hello /lit/erati, long time lurker and first time poster here. I am looking to dive into Japanese literature and was hoping someone here could help. I know nothing about their literature outside of the Murakami books my wife reads. Where should I start? Who is their Dostoyevsky? Their Joyce? Thanks.

is long time lurker code for idiot? have you not seen the sticky?

The sticky has a section specifically for Japanese lit. Personally, I would recommend Mishima's Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea.

Another option is Abe's The Woman in the Dunes.

As to comparisons to Joyce, Dostoyevsky, etc. I couldn't really help you with that.

Seconding the Sailor, just finished it and god damn...

I, in all honesty, did not read the sticky. I had the sudden urge to want to dive into it, and when I am like that I get tunnel vision. My first thought was literally "I'll ask 4chan". So, I skipped the sticky. Personal character failing there.
