I don't go on /mu/ and I assumed /lit/ would have an interest in art. Or at least a few people here.

Read something on the history of art to get the general idea. Then you can just read books that specifically focus on a given period.

Read some bios. The World of Art series is also a good source for history and inspiration.

How exactly do you want to into-art as it would relate to a book?

Because it's just connecting the eyes and hands

Kenneth Clark's Civilisation is a really informative and well put together documentary on art, sculpture, architecture etc. and an excellent starting point, basically looks at the history of civilisation through the history of art. Then maybe try something like A history of art in 3 colours. I'd say after that you could move on to specialising with the context you would then have. History of blue is fantastic apart from anything you should watch that.

Interpreting art?
Nothing interesting has really happened since Burke's "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful".

You must unlearn the logical thinking that or education system imparts and start "thinking with intuition"

See, the reason why it's hard to describe is that it's the opposite of thinking verbally, a.k.a in symbols

Read Keith Johnstone's Impro - Improvisation and the Theatre and Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, they're a good start and will make you understand the mentality you must adopt

>> No.4691386

>>4691382
fogot to mention that this is mainly for adopting the artist's mentality, since you didn't specify what you meant by how to get "into art"

I'm an engineering student with genius level grades, I spend almost my entire days making music, drawing, watching films or reading books.
When taking MBTI tests I typically score INFP or INTP, a balance is possible.

I’m not trying to stir up any arguments here, but I believe every person that considers themselves well-cultured should be able to appreciate art for both technique and idea alike. Saying baroque is “kitschy" is as childish as the “I could do that” attitude, and not seeing the importance of either skill or (transgressive) intention is, to me, a sure sign of closed-mindedness.

If the idea is not expressed by the work, if the depiction is so bland and vague that anything can be projected into it, it is no longer "art", but only noise.
And yes, technically everything can be" art", because there is no hard definition of the term, and someone made a joke about that 100 years ago! How witty and funny! So witty and funny that "artists" have just repeated that joke again and again for decades and done nothing else! Not deconstructed beauty and meaning, but abandoned it in favor of pretentious wankery and skill-less reiteration of a century old, shallow joke. Everyone is an artist. Nobody is an artist!

I get what you’re trying to say, that’s why I attached a painting by Klein with my post, although it could’ve also been something from Duchamp, Mondrian, or Pollock — people who actually questioned the limits of art when it was still supposed to be an unquestionable thing. And while there is some quality, thought-provoking contemporary production, I agree on the fact that the vast majority of it is just mindless regurgitation of the same old “hurp what is art what is truth what is ethics” without coming to any conclusions or challenging any norms. Also, shock for the sake of shock value itself is really getting stale, if you ask me.
