I see the book as essentially a loose post-modern reinterpretation of The Tempest.
It's got a lot of things going for it - it has some interesting existential ideas and some cool mystical/literary/classical allusions.
The protagonist is presented with an elaborate and immersive 'masque' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masque)) and is given free reign to experience it as he sees fit.

But the book is ruined by the insufferable, apathetic and small-minded protagonist/narrator who makes sure the novel revolves around his depressing and boring attempts to bang various girls

It could've been so much more
I think the fact it was written in the 60s is part of it - people were obsessed with sexuality and unfortunately sexuality overshadows some of the more interesting aspects of the book

The bourgeoisie (Eloi) can only maintain their lives of leisure so long as there is the proletariat (Morlocks) to do the work for them. That the Morlocks eat the Eloi is supposed to reflect that the working classes will one day cannibalise the bourgeoisie. The Morlocks are presented as hideous mutants because that's what industrial servitude does to human beings.

In my opinion, the best part of the book is the last 80 pages.

The landscape (which is a character in itself) takes a back seat, and the book focuses on J. Holden and the Kid's failed attempt at redemption, and later demise at the hands of his former leader.

The part of Blood Meridian which I remember better than any other thing, is when the kid/man finds the old and dry women, whom he tries to help. But it is too late. She had been dead there for years.

The last line sent fucking chills down my spine like never before.

When the kid is older, he finds a bunch of slaughtered and mutilated corpses.

Nearby, he sees an old, kneeling woman, whom he tries to help. He "confesses" to her, by telling her about his life and hardships, but when he touches her to help her, "She weighed nothing. She was just a dried shell and she had been dead in that place for years."

He is too late for redemption of his sins. Years too late. He wants to be a better man, but can't. He can never undo what is.

He later transgresses completely, when he shoots Elrod and takes away a young boys only family. The Kid/Man is beyond redemption.

He then goes to "Hell or something like it" which is Fort Griffin. There he witnesses the slaughter of innocence: the dancing bear getting shot.
He is then consumed by the Fort Griffin Demon, J. Holden.

That is the simple version of it.

It's because the pretentious e/lit/ist in here only want people to read certain books and nothing else. They books that you are "allowed" to read is in a very very small pool.

I read it directly after reading two non-fiction accounts of survival:
"A fortunate life" set around WWI (not the entire focus of the autobiography but a pivotal point in the man's story).
"If this is a man" by Primo Levi, principally set in a concentration camp in WWII.

Here is what is interesting, the two factual autobiographies were filled with strong themes of survival against the odds. Making do. Never giving in, even though so many were perishing around them.

Tl;Dr I agree with you
