Good reads?

This is like me asking if I should get a bagel one day to see if I like bagels

I don't know man, do you think you might like bagels? How can you go wrong

I'm asking if they are reliable sources regarding Norse culture, etc?

And if they're any good reads?

>> No.4638330

>>4638300

Depends on what you mean by Norse culture. But in terms of mythology, yes.
The Edda is pretty much the be all, end all.

>And if they're any good reads?
read it and find out

>> No.4638380

of course you should read them. they're the source material for that society. they're essential.

i wouldn't call them a good read. they're fragmentary and obtuse. the translation i read had good annotations talking about different scholarly interpretations of what the fuck some of the weird lines meant.

Since you don't really know what they are I can you're going to read for 10 minutes then drop them because they're too complex. Try something a little more entry tier like this.

>>4638384
Believe me, I've read a lot of 'complex' shit. I just want more to do with Norse than Beowulf.

>> No.4638391

>>4638388
Then yes. Read them shits.

I'll have so many epics to check out, swear, these books are gonna make me go into debt, brah.

You kind of have to know who the gods are and how they came about and what they do and all that jazz. That's why I recommend The Norse Myths, it'll give you the backdrop you need.

What about The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles?
Seems like no one knows much about it.

Because historians spend their whole careers studying it. You should read what they have to say first.

>> No.4638435

The best one is Njal's Saga. One of the stories in there is about a man with a cook too big to penetrate is wife with and the effects that has on their marriage. Theres lots of brutal slayings and figthing between clans. Cold blooded motherfuckers they were.

Good read.
