An atheist doesn't believe in an afterlife, so it's through his work he tries to survive.

Someone can have faith to oneself and motivation to create great work, but not faith to God or other saints....

If you don't believe in an after life or higher purpose then all you have is the present and now. You need to act and produce great works else fail to do anything with that time.

Why arent all religious people motivated to create great works through their faith?

But sillyness aside the atheist would find it easier to create great works given that life is more permanent and significant rather (and I use the abrahamic example as it is the most prevalent) than a an extremely brief trial before an eternal afterlife.
