So, basically, I posted yesterday on /lit/ that I was working at a publisher and was having issues deciding what to do with a book.

The problem, you see, is the fact that the book contained scenes of a dude fucking a dragon. It made sense in context and wasn't just weird porn, and the rest of the story was quite good. However, the oddness of dragon-lovin' made me hesitant to actually bring it up to my boss. Some anons in that thread convinced me that I should at least talk to him about it, so I did.

Today we had a meeting about the book.

I'll post what happened in that meeting with my next post.

My boss was late to the meeting. This is not an unusual occurrence, he has a new baby and doesn't get much sleep, and we usually hold meetings in the mornings.

Most of my coworkers agreed with me on all accounts. They also thought that the book was good, but that the dragon-sex might be a problem for mainstream audiences. We continued discussing the merits of the book, possible edits, and other things like that until our boss finally came into the room.

This might sound a bit like I'm bullshitting, because his reaction was completely unexpected. He came in with the manuscript, slammed it (or, really, just placed it rather forcefully) on the table, and said "This shit is the next Game of Thrones."

Apparently, in his mind, the Fantasy genre is going to get insanely large (as if it wasn't already) in the next few years, possibly coming close to the second or third most-profitable. He briefly rambled a bit about how modern movies needed to be "big," and how fantasy was a "big genre," referring to the large scale of pretty much all fantasy novels. He thinks that this will lead to more and more fantasy movies getting made (as traditional thrillers lose the marketplace to video games, or something), which will in turn lead to more books sales. He concluded by stating that the manuscript we were reviewing was a "sure-fire shot to the top."

After he finished, I asked him why he thought the book would be so successful (carefully keeping my spaghetti in my pockets as I did so). He went off a brief list of reasons of why the book was good, most of which I already discussed in the previous thread.

Then he concluded the list with the phrase "but the key part is the dragon," and shit started to get interesting.

Holy shit this post is so poorly-written. Sorry about that, I don't really have time to properly edit since you guys are so anxious to know what happened

My boss believes that the dragon-fucking gives the novel a "rebellious edge," something that is sure to make it appeal to teenagers and young adults. He rambled for a really long-ass time on how the controversy would only improve sales. He even suggested that going MORE explicit might be a good idea.

I think he might be fucking crazy, but he had a lot of good points.

Anyway, he's the boss, so we're publishing it. It'll probably take a year or so to edit and prepare, but when it comes out, we're going to market it HARD. I think he's planning on diverting a big portion of our budget to it. We're going to tell the author this tomorrow.

Also, he suggested that we use viral marketing to create hype before the book releases. So I MIGHT be able to convince him to let me post excerpts here before it's out.

Note: I had no idea about the viraling thing before today. I normally hate it when companies try to do that, because it's always shitty, but I think I can let it slide if it means I can post bits for you to read. Would y'all be cool with that?

Standard fantasy stuff, with a few twists I don't know if I can give away.

Characters are also fairly standard. There's the MC (who functions kind of light a Knight), a dragon (also a warrior in her country), a prince who is also a wizard (although magic works strangely in the universe), and some others.

I think it's safe to tell you that the general setting has the standard "Countries based on the race of inhabitants," but there's some differences -- The Dwarves, Elves, and Humans, for example, get along just fine and have many military and economic ties.

I don't really want to get into real detail.

It's not actually smut. We wouldn't be publishing it if it was. It's just a damn good novel that happens to have a dragon-lovin' scene in it.

Smut is best self-published, honestly.

Okay, so you are a medium-sized publisher, I don't know whether that means as an imprint or publisher overall, that publishes YA Fantasy and the publisher in incorporated in one of the green areas on that map, probably in the New England region. Leveza was the wrong name for her; she was big and strong, not light. Her bulk made her seem both male and female; her shoulders were broad but so were her hips and breasts.
She had beautiful eyes, round and black, and she was thoughtful; her heavy jaws would grind round and round as if imitating the continual motion of her mind. She always looked as if she were listening to something distant, faraway.
Like many large people, Leveza was easily embarrassed. Her mane would bristle up across the top of her head and down her spine. She was strong and soft all at once, and kind. I liked talking to her; her voice was so high and gentle, though her every gesture was blurting and forlorn.
But that voice when it went social! If Leveza saw a Cat crouching in the grass, her whinnying was sudden, fierce and irresistible. All of us would pirouette into a panic at once. Her cry was infallible.
So she was an afrirador, one of our sharpshooters, always reared up onto hindquarters to keep watch, always carrying a rifle, always herself a target. My big brave friend. Her rear buttocks grew ever more heavy from constant standing. She could walk upright like an Ancestor for a whole day. Her pelt was beautiful, her best feature, a glossy deep chestnut, no errant Ancestor reds. As rich and deep as the soil under the endless savannah.
We were groom-mates in our days of wonder.

Been there, done that.
Geoff Ryman's "Days of Wonder" is about interspecies love among a sapient horse and cat. Also, love, life, and sex among sapient horses and other various creatures. I read it in THE YEAR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION: TWENTY-SIX ANNUAL COLLECTION.
