Best novels involving aliens.

Bonus point if you can find novels that have pic-related's feel.

That was some good pasta
>it reminded me of "the gift"
>>the one with the aliens that used the relativistic bomb to blow up earth because they thought we were a threat, but then it was too late to call it back because we'd suddenly become enlightened, but then after the bomb hit we went all nuts for revenge and sent an armada of starships to eat them all

Man, that was a great pasta.

Are there aliens in there? There's a whole lot more family drama than anyone says, though. Gnosticism in California is 90% of the rest.

Agreed it's not that dark, although one could argue.

Childhood's End has many original ideas and can be pretty fucking grim. Sure is nigh mystical.

Need more First Contact stories.

>benevolent faggoty aliens who first seem mean and then turn out to be space hippies with hive mind need not apply

>fucking hate this shit

>> No.4592105

>>4592086

It's quite dark actually. Card based the war stuff on letters from the Civil War and his knowledge of US military (without going the Kubrick way and shitting all over it and the people in the army).

Much like Catcher in the Rye, don't be fooled by children being main characters: it was written by an adult for an adult audience. You don't win Hugos and Nebulas with kid lit. Think Battle Royale.

I can see that, especially how ENDER FUCKING MERKS THE ENTIRE SPECIES OF THE BUGS LIKE WOW HOLY SHIT NIGGA CALM DOWN, AND THEN LATER HE HAS TO DEAL WITH THE ENTIRE MURDER OF A CIVILIZATION FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE AND HE'S ONLY A LITTLE TINY CHILD FUCK

I can also kinda see it in that sort of philosophy about dealing with enemies that Ender has
>those boys who try to jump him
>>he fucking breaks that one kids arm like a boss
and then later
>>>when that little guy taco tries to do an American History X rape in the bathroom and Ender just fucking kills the shit out of him
>damn ender calm down

Yeah, I agree, Ender's Game is where it's at.

I read Speaker recently; it's very different. I was very much into the xenobiology stuff, but I have to say some plotpoints didn't convince me and feel like loose ends.

Should I keep reading these books or does it get really bad after those two?

I actually enjoyed Speaker more than Ender's Game.
Considering some of Card's controversial views, I was pleasantly surprised by the realistic portrayals of religious and non-religious characters and how they ultimately realise they have more things in common than conflicts.

Not to mention the inclusion of different new forms of life. I just wish they would have explored the Rachni...I mean Buggers culture a bit more.

Ah well, I'm only just starting with Xenocide. Plenty more to look forward to.

Yes

>Aliens visit earth, instead of wanting to destroy earth/take us to your leader, etc. They want to meet a paleontologist.
>Apparently the great extinctions of earth's history happened simultaneously on two other planets
>Aliens are treating this as evidence of god's existence, and want to look at earth's fossil records.
>Lots of philosophy between Euphoric paleontologist and Alien.

Good read, the author writes some pretty interesting stuff, but all of them suffer near the ending.

Yeah, he tends to go for really high concept and then spend too much time pontificating instead of resolving it cleanly.
If you end up liking it, I definitely recommend Mindscan, Triggers and Flashfoward (If you watched the lame tv series that got made out of it, its vastly different) by the same author. It's hard to find good Hard SF these days...
