Suppose a person can only 50 literary books - novel, plays, poetry, short stories and similar - in her lifetime.

What should she read? In which order?

Given the way this thread has devolved into Gender theory, I'd say everything by Lacan, Butler and Kristeva.

I dunno. It takes a large number of books to become a good reader in the first place.

But the only book necessary for enlightenment for a modern individual would be Prometheus Rising and Ficciones.

No, using female pronouns for hypotheticals is standard practice in academic writing these days, because if you use male pronouns you get complaints.

This. Do it. They're great books and JG is an amazing author, but they're worth it because of all the philosofical thought behind them. I mean, TFiOS basically teaches you the meaning of nichilism, and why EVERYONE must ask himself existential questions. It teaches how too be a human, how you're not a person if you don't interrogate yourself about your life and you just keep surviving and not living. Looking for Alaska is deeply spiritual, and personally I find the question "How do you get out of the labirynth of pain?" the most important, difficult and impressive question anyone could ever ask. Really, read them.
