What are some great beginner's books for Greek mythology? Or just, great books that go in depth on the subject.

For a class in college I was assigned D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths. It's technically a picture book, but don't be turned off by that. It's a great introduction to the key myths, and it puts everything in an order that makes sense. I'd recommend it.

Or you could just read Ovid's Metamorphoses and not be a fag.

Bump.

I'm looking for something like this too.

>> No.453706

Ancient:
Apollodoros, The Library (ancient manual of myth)
Hesiod, Theogony (genealogically organized poem on the gods and divinely descended figures)
Ovid, Metamorphoses (highly sophisticated epic poem using numerous Greek myths in interesting ways)

Modern:
Timothy Gantz, Early Greek Myth (1 or 2 volume edition - examines the characters, stories, sources, and variants)

BTW, as I said in another thread, still the most comprehensive edition of Apollodoros is J. G. Frazer's in two volumes:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=apollodorus%20frazer%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts

Frazer has extensive notes on other sources for the myths (excellent way to begin following up the ones you're interested in), and refers to versions from obscure sources (like the so-called Vatican Mythographers, late mythological texts in the Vatican library) that aren't easily available or translated.
