i think the reason atheists get a bad rep is because of the vocal minority. same with feminists, homosexuals, or pretty much any way of thinking/feeling that is relatively new or not the norm.

People think that because they're different from other people they have to explain to the others why they're superior for being different which hurts feelings and inflates egos.

I've never put any real thought into this but I feel like this is at least partially true.
