Which authors should I look for when browsing for fantasy literature? I'm starting my venture in fantasy lit and would like some help for starters.

Tokien is essential.

/lit/ also has a hard on for Gene Wolfe.

I've already started reading the book but I can't seem to find any hardcopies at my local store.

Any more to mention?

Also any titles with fairies in them?

>>4525341
i haven't even heard about those and i read quite a few fantasy books

hint, it won't probably tell you much about real fantasy apart from how it's seen by some jerks who compiled that list

>> No.4525347

you like monster girls because being part animal makes them inferior and therefore less threatening

Well, these are a few of my personal favorites:

His Dark Materials: young adult series (think Harry Potter), but probably the best I've read in its genre.

The Conan Chronicles: a collection of short stories and a novel featuring the original barbarian. Amazing pulp fiction.

The Once and Future King: King Arthur retold for the 20th century. This reads more like a fairy tail than "epic fantasy", so if you're into grim and gritty you might want to look into Cornwell or something.

The Princess Bride: a postmodern fairy tail. You've probably seen the movie. The book is just as good.

Conan stories are absolutely wonderful. I even like the recent(2006) Conan comics by Kurt Busiek, which includes a couple of REH adaptations. Busiek does a great job at writing Conan and it's worth looking into if you're a fan of the books.
