How the fuck do I imply I'm laughing, being ironic or sarcastic in a semi-formal letter to someone mature and with a serious subject? I'm not going to fucking put a smile on that, a lol or a (laughs).

I don't want to sound like a fucking cunt prick asshole bitch ass bitch. Ex: "I do understand the issue at hand but honestly, if one of two of them did die it wouldn't really matter".

I laughed. That sounds extremely autistic. It does make sense.

Is it the norm or are you just trolling me fellow /lit/izen?

>> No.4495046

I don't know. This is something I struggle with in real life. I'll say something which I obviously do not actually think and I'll have people react as if I'm being serious. In their defense, I do try to sell the line, because I figure that if I'm not wholly committed in delivery then it would fall flat anyway. Maybe I just need new friends

I don't know, OP. Just hope that you throw enough ridiculousness in there that it comes across. It's a difficult quality to convey in person; I've no idea how you could do it in writing.

Looks to laid back no? Letter will be addressed to someone in politics.

>>4495046

Much easier in real life, you are probably doing it wrong. You must deliver it correctly, use your voice tone and facial expressions to give the right feeling to it.

> You must deliver it correctly, use your voice tone and facial expressions to give the right feeling to it.
But that runs the whole fun of it. You have to deliver it in dead monotone, and reveal that the stance is a joke a moment later. Timing is the most important part, though. A little bit too late or early, and it will sound as if you try to initiate damage control.

>> No.4495072

Either use footnotes like another anon said or at the end include a Key and set up a series of text codes to mean your intention.
For example i have "/s" meaning sarcasm, "/i"meaning irony, "/:" meaning straight up joke (i hardly ever use this one because if i need to tell them its a joke then its hardly worth telling).

Once again I thank you for your time in replying to my previous letter and on reading this one Mr. President of the World.

>probably doing it wrong
Depends on your definition of wrong. I suppose it's "wrong" because people often don't get that I'm joking, but I don't agree with the way other people do it either. I want to sound like it's something I believe; I don't want it to sound like it's a joke, so apparent that people who don't even know me pick up on it. That's the problem. I believe it's something that should be subtle, whereas everyone else in the world wants to giggle during it or sound snarky

Well fuck, you want to know it a joke or not? If you do, do it X way, if not, do it Y way.

If your friends can't capture obvious ones the issue lies with them, not you.

Maybe they are the kind of people that think the steve carell/ricky gervais feud is real.

>> No.4495111

i'd go with '(kidding)' after the joke.

this really. it depends on the type of people anyway. some people understand irony and other don't. generally if you're American you'll get more of the former.

Think of it like this OP, this letter may be formal but this dude is just a human being. He jerks off to big tits and smiles at his poop after taking a big shit.

>>4495122
i was going to say that you have a joke in your writing you have to be a bit ballsy about it or not at all; "kidding" is for fags. but this is actually a good idea. would not have thought of it. it looks like you're not even trying but it gets exactly what you want across.

I deal with this every day in my real life. Am I autistic or are the people around me just not at my level?

I made a girl cry by arguing that the elephant man was a selfish crybaby and would be less interest at a social gathering than Saddam Hussein. I wouldn't have said something so retarded normally, but she bragged all the time about being a writer and having her masters degree in English, so I assumed she of all people would appreciate the irony. Instead she threatened to kill me and made my girlfriend mad at me for about three months for 'being mean'
