in a good way or a bad way?

>> No.4482117

Lower on the totem than Inherent Vice.

>> No.4482119

A surprisingly straight forward Pynchon novel with less shaggy dogs than you would think.

>> No.4482126

It convinced me Pynchon's thrown in the towel after all these years. I think Against The Day was his last real throw toward high end world breaking lit, and now he's just in it for the giggles. It's alright, certainly better than most literary fiction, but if you're into new and original stuff and are already familiar with Pynchon it may not be worth your time.

>> No.4482135

i didn't like it too much. the worst thing about it, to me, was the humor. i find most pynchon both fun and funny, but not bleeding edge. aside from that i think it's probably ok, but didn't leave a very strong impression on me.

so what distinguishes it from the older Pynchon that makes it so much lesser in your opinion?

>> No.4482140

>>4482119
wasn't the entire story a shaggy dog?

>> No.4482146

Not worth your time. Pynchon's lost his spark.

>Not worth your time. Pynchon's lost his spark.

I regret having to concur with this. "V." is hands-down one of my all-time favorite novels, and "Mason & Dixon" is stellar.

But "Bleeding Edge" is, at best, a waste of time.

Not that guy, but I can tell you why. It's a very drab cause-and-effect linear storyline with Maxine bumping into people where she expects them to be and the plot moving forward because it's conscious of the fact that it has to move forward. This mediocre storytelling is at home with your usual Bestseller's list fare, but it's not at home with Pynchon.

It's legitimately Pynchon's laziest effort, and it reads like a Patterson novel at times.

damn i guess i should've consulted lit before embarking on my first Pynchon. I read Point Omega to begin reading DeLillo and loved it What do you think would be the best novel to start reading Pynchon with?

V

>>4482184
Crying of Lot 49, it's short and relatively easy to get into. That's where I started and then moved onto V. But honestly, start wherever the fuck you want.

The Crying of Lot 49. Or V. That's normally the way people get into Pynchon.

>> No.4482210

i don't wanna start out with this one now that i hear nearly everyone on this thread thinks it's his worst novel

I don't see a single post claiming Crying of Lot 49 to be his worst novel. Definitely not his best, but it's not a bad book by any means.

>> No.4482233

>>4482213
no i meant that bleeding edge seems to be agreed upon on this thread as his worst novel
