In a work of literature I look for 3 things: a) Imaginative language and verbal mastery; b) Nice and interesting plots and c) Complex and profound characters. I don’t give much value to ideas and philosophies, but much more to the verbal virtuosity and human quality of a book.

You don’t need to have all of them (a, b and c), just one is enough. For example, Shakespeare, in my opinion, had both A and C, and Tolstoy both B and C (his language was beautiful, but more in a crystalline and clean way).

I generally don’t like poetry, because after I discovered Shakespeare I am always struggling to find the same metaphorical power and prosperity of imagery, but I must say I also love Keats, Dante, Whitman, some Coleridge, some Milton, and Blake (for example: there are other poets).

Some present examples of art that I like (from various mediums) are:

My problem is the following: history and science tells us that black people on average are less intelligent than other races. By history I just point out African history and the history of any country whose control is in the hands of black people. There is also no poetry, no verbal inventiveness of language.

So, for that reasons I can’t imagine how an intelligent man, who frequents a board dedicated to literature like this one can actually like a trash like Rap and Hip-Hop.

I don’t act like a racist on my daily routine. I am educated and gentle with everyone, and wish the best to everyone, although I don’t believe that all people are equal. Some black ethnic groups from Kenya are genetically much more able to run on longer distances, and some other black ethnic groups (the one who is present in Jamaica) to run short speed trials: this is amply known and accepted by the scientific community. Is extremely unfair. I searched his lyrics, and although many of them are quite intelligent and original he almost never ruse any single metaphor, simile or inventive imagery. There is never any example of that wonderful verbal mastery of Shakespeare, of that metaphorical texture that is always bubbling with strange fusions of imagery.

This Akala guy might be god on math, but he sure is not a literary genius, let alone the next Shakespeare.

Also: many of his lyrics are constructed in old hip-hop clichés, and the fact that he adds some historical accurate facts to show that “oh, look at me, I am so bright” don’t change the fact that he is simply repeating something like 50 years of black winning-literature.

But to be honest the lacking of a metaphorical texture in poetry is quite common: to use this style of writing your inventiveness must be very incandescent and high, because you not only need to be creative with the whole poem, its skeleton and main message, but must also fight with your own brain with every new metaphor and simile. A Shakespearean speech, for example, is a banquet of invention, because after one metaphor is born another is already cracking its shell and stepping on the hells of the older image. Many people would die to write only 10% of Shakespeare’s metaphors, so exuberant was his invention. But like I said, even in canonical poetry so great a metaphorical gift is rare. Rap artists almost never use metaphors: they simply tell a story using rhymed speech.
