>tfw hating photos in my youth because they seemed like desperate attempts at hanging on to being in a world of becoming and giving way to the ego instead of memory

Brings to mind the story of my Grandad who, as a young man, worked alongside Julius Nyerere in a school in Dar es Salaam. They were eating lunch together, in what I can only describe as a 'mess hall', and the future President had engaged my grandfather in conversation. My grandfather, a proud man at the best of times, was becoming increasingly irate at the man whom had taken to eating his chicken wing by dipping it in a bowl of soup. He would dip the wing into the soup, and then gesture wildly as he spoke to my grandfather, so that the juices of the soup yet clinging to the chicken would fly into the face of the unwitting recipient. Such an act irked my grandfather to the point of no return and thus he leaped from his seat to leave the chicken flinging man without word.

To this day, to the man that the rest of his nation calls 'Mwalimu' (Meaning teacher), the first President of a united Tanzania, a man that the majoirty of the populace respect and even in some cases reveres, my grandfather holds a grudge against him for a harmless act 40years in the passing.

Or so he claims. It's mostly probably fabricated. He has also claimed to met Richard Branson, Prince Charles, Naomi Campbell, Kennedy, oh and played a top flight match for West Ham united in goal when all three of the goalkeepers were taken ill.

I'd like to respond to this one because it highlights one of my own fears. it is probably one of the things I feel most bad about, not only because the pictures are shameful and outs me as a shallow person but also because it's at an embarrassing level of self-indulgence. I even feel a prick of shame when seeing those photo collage montages in documentaries when they're detailing the early life of someone famous, thinking "if this was me they'd put that awful photo there and everything would be ruined"
with that said I had trouble taking china miéville seriously after seeing him
