I would say in writing it should always be "a historic confrontation" but spoken it could be either.

I agree with you. I'd imagine that for most people, seeing "an historic" in print could potentially be distracting. I side with White on the issues of grammar, in that, for fiction, you should write what reads and sounds natural instead of what is necessarily textbook.
