4350073 No.4350073[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Were Yukio Mishima's right-wing political views and ultra-nationalism a clever ruse to disguise his own narcissistic philosophy and obsession with death?

His biographer says it explicitly. plus, he wasn't a fascist, but a traditionalist and monarchist, and Japanese traditionalism mixed well with his /fit/ persona. There was no way he would let his body and mind deteriorate naturally

>> No.4350283

He obviously didnt think he would spark a coup d'etat, it was just a way for him to die. If you read his tetralogy (which is amazing) you will find a lot of insight.

Fascists are just traditionalists without monarchs to worship. So a traditionalist and monarchist is a right-winger

The answer is a resounding yes, but it's a long haul kind of read.
The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea was my first experience with Mishima, and looking back, I'm glad. It's short, but simultaneously beautiful and deeply unsettling - it's a condensed version of everything there is to love about him as an author.

That's pretty much true, and Araki was really just ripping off Fist of the North Star and Dracula for part 1.

He explicitly said a man's body could no longer be beautiful after 50...he killed himself when he was 45.
His 'narcissism' was deeply rooted in his insecurity as a sickly/week child well into his adulthood when you take in account the interview with his then lover Akihiro Maruyama on a traumatic critique on his physique which sparked his obsession with body building.
Then take in account his childhood growing up in a 'westernized', well-to-do family with his obvious rebellion towards it from 'Confessions of a Mask' and his early sexual desires for 'common, hard working men' and his sexual desires toward Saint Sebastian and male death.

What it comes down to is a extremely multi-faceted person doing an difficult-to-interpret act which reflects in fallacy as much as the fallacies of his characters doing somewhat the same thing.
His death was a planned-out ritual, his life a theater.

...sometimes I get the feeling you people have no clue what you're talking about and base your assumptions on whims.

He was a spoilt, insulated, maladjusted brat who had a tinge of genius (no doubt that he was able t accomplish what he did). A 'tragic' figure somewhat but also one can't help but feel unsympathetic and resentful considering how pampered these types tend to be (rich upper class families, mingling with the well to do, having all the best the world and society has to offer at the fingertips)

Oh, absolutely...the awareness of his family's situation and his own personality is probably what makes him so compelling.
It's at this where I can't imagine being wholly unsympathetic towards him, most of these types are completely oblivious to their position and it's kind of enigmatic to see his form such a strong opinion against it, yet fully dabble in it as well.
If Rimbauld chose to live among 'the scum', Mishima seemed to live in both worlds.
