I hate when this happens in any form of media. When a main character in a film works in the film industry it breaks immersion as I quietly seethe at the writer for his lack of originality.

When a protagonist in a novel is an author, editor, or prospective writer I'm always tempted to return to Hemingway, who said "fuck that, I'll just do awesome shit and write about it, who wants to read about a guy writing a book?"

Surprisingly people let Stephen king off easily in a lot of this. Not only does he base the characters off himself, but he writes it in his home state.

I can't stand people who can only write themselves
