The title always fluctuates. I have many favorites.

Les Miserables really enlightened me to prejudices I harbored inside myself, and helped me to steer myself toward the constitution of a better character. I love it for that reason. To Brothers Karamazov I can account the same. Besides this I had immense fun merely reading both books.

Some titles that did not have the same impact on my being but which I remember fondly would be:

The Elephant Keeper
Number9Dream
A Monster's Notes
Out Backward
The Bartimaeus Trilogy
Hemingway's short stories
Death in Venice
Crime and Punishment
The Devil's Own Work
Ulysses

in all seriousness, this is a tough question for some people

I genuinely love the portrayal of humanity and deeper, underlying forces that guide the world in Song of Ice and Fire. It's definitely my favorite fantasy series, along with most of the rest of the world, and for good reason.

My favorite sci-fi is so far the Lunar Chronicles but that's just because I'm a sucker for believable sci-fi settings and romantic subplots affected by the order of that world.

I found it massively entertaining. I am the Byzantine nut (I first came to /lit/ touting The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire) and the combination of artistic license and historical respect he gave the subject just impressed me. I'm sorry to not see anyone else reading him (on and on we get Stephan King! etc) Lastly, finding a good book is like finding a good song. It will fade out a bit, be replaced with another great book, surely. For now, I don't think I'm promoting it all that much. I've made no threads dedicated to it

>and deeper, underlying forces that guide the world in Song of Ice and Fire.
The way Asoiaf does causation of events and fluctuating fortunes and all that jazz you would notice reading a history book is legitimately terrific. I know certain people roll their eyes when others propose that asoiaf might have merit other than entertainment value, but at this stage I'm kind of responding in similar fashion. It feels like the books are about the nature of how history plays out, like the march of time is a concept actually given attention to. It's not just the characters that are present; there's a greater force prevalent that they're subject to.
I'll never understand this apparent conflict between appreciating literary and genre fiction.

>I'll never understand this apparent conflict between appreciating literary and genre fiction.

It only exists because every piece of genre fiction with real artistic merit is co-opted by the literary establishment and declared "literary fiction." 1984 and Brave New World are sci-fi. Blood Meridian is a western. Etc.

That being said, GRRM's prose is legitimately terrible and that alone will prevent anyone from taking him seriously.

>That being said, GRRM's prose is legitimately terrible
There are a handful of sections that could properly be described as terrible without any hyperbole. Most of his writing is generally neither remarkable nor terrible.

>and that alone will prevent anyone from taking him seriously.
This veneration of prose over every other possible aspect of literature has reached amusing heights. A work whose main strength is obviously not its prose is meant to be disregarded...ridiculous. Genre is usually noted for its ideas and concepts, not writing.
