It's excellent. But I've never met a guy who's actually finished it.

Every time I mention it as one of my favorite books, the guy is like "oh yeah! I love that book too!" but then when I'm like "what's your favorite part" he's like "uh... well it's been a long time" or some such.

Turns out hipster douchebags come in all genders. Who would have thought?

At the very least, you may get a mirror to show you how socially retarded you are and you'll learn tolerance and to tune out overly religious things without offending anyone.

I love The Brothers Karamazov, and have picked it up for the third time earlier this week. Fyodor really showcases his angry recluse characterization in Notes from Underground, even though there's always one in the books I've read of his.

How about you fucking try, 'what do you think?' If we want to be as autistic as possible, starting out on a debate about kinds of small talk, then I guess I'll start saying that you're better off, probably, to use general, rather than specific, questions, if you're hoping to 'stimulate a conversation'. Or, you could try starting out with a statement, like, 'I liked it, but the wraith stuff threw me off a bit, even though I get it with the whole Hamlet connection and everything'.

Sure; it can lead into that, but it restricts your entry into that discussion, which discussion the other party, or you even, might prefer, through an initial plot-centered discussion (and, come on, they're going to respond to that question by describing a plot point), and it's always better to leave a greater number of topics on the table, is the only problem; I've got nothing against plot-narratives. And plus, and perhaps because of all that, the question, as you can probably judge from the response this thread gave it, is a known favourite of bores everywhere; it's not the one to go by.

Don't give me that. I have played quite a few VNs, and I have yet to come across a plot that wasn't bland and predictable, or a character that hadn't been oversimplified to the point of cringeworthyness. Worse than that, every single one was mediocre or just outright bad in terms of prose (no surprise there, given that awful 'one sentence at a time'-format most of them use)

See above. And not all character have to be complex. Most people aren't that complex really.

Ever 17 is generally considered the best in the series. It has one of the most fascinating primuses of any work of fiction ever. And again if you haven't played Saya no Uta you seriously should. Like Punpun or Yume Nikki, it's a story that could not be told in any other medium.

>Anon pls, your underage is showing. Most people are in fact quite complicated, if only in a shallow, a little fucked up way. Do you really not see the problem with writing a story about one-dimensional characters?
Complexity is easier to fake than you'd think. I'd much rather have 1-dimensional, archetypal characters than ones with little shallow identifying quirks thrown in with no value to the story (the John Green/YA/indie movie method).

Give it time, Anon. The visual novel, once it is iPad/Smartphone compatible, will revitalize reading for an entire generation of tech-obsessed youth (after being distanced from its Japanese roots and made digestible for the close minded).

Someone here mentioned Cortazar's Hopscotch.

He said citing a certain chapter to a woman could get you laid but I forgot which chapter was.

Maybe chapter 70. Or was it 77?

I have story about my success with women.

I was at the bus stop waiting for the bus when the bus pulled up. In it was a lady who was young an acceptably cute. She smiled when I entered the bus, and smiled at me as she was pulling up to the bus stop. The bus was nearly empty, and it was a small community shuttle, not a city one. I saw near the front and she made a comment about the traffic lights. I didn't say anything because I think it would have been awkward. But I knew she was speaking to no one directly but it was aimed mostly at me. When we arrived at the bus station and the bus parked in its spot, everyone filed out and said goodbye. When I said goodbye, she said "ok I'll see you later." quietly. She definitely likes me I think. But she's a bus driver, and I'm in college, and I don't if how I'll ever see her again.

Thomas Hobbes Leviathan and Machiavelli's the Prince.

Hobbes has this short passage where he teaches you about confidence. It's very useful to think about.

Machiavelli helped me come to terms with the idea that 'political struggle' is an inevitable fact of human life. So there's nothing wrong with.. I guess hiding parts of yourself and seeming other than what you are for 'political' purposes.

It seems kind of far fetched. But I really think these two guys helped me.

Read Zizek, Foucault, Sartre, and Camus and quote them extensively -- especially Zizek. Walk around with a copy of Infinite Jest under one arm, and a de Sade book under the other.

This kid at my school lived in an apartment dorm where his roommates would throw parties all the time. He'd leave his door open, faintly playing some Bob Dylan or some shit on his turntable, lounging around and reading. Special snowflake grills would wander in and talk to him about his bookshelf. He'd give them a copy of Norwegian Wood (he had three for this specific purpose) and send them along.
They'd be back within a week, slobbing knob like a pro.
Just for clarification, too, this guy was by no means a looker. Failure at life, too, he dropped out and busses tables in Lousiville.

I've got girls before without the aid of cheesy tactics though. I think he gave me it for the same reason he's gave other guys the book, he just wants a wing man.

I get the sense that he's actually pretty lonely, since these hook ups never lead to anything more. Which is what the book is about, it doesn't teach you anything about keeping a girl, and the vast majority of techniques promote straight up lying about every aspect of yourself.

>> No.4360335

>>4357971
But you would have gotten MORE girls with the aid of those tactics. That's the point.

Anyway I think the point of the book is to get your foot in the door, then keeping the person around from that point is up to you if you want to. Not like most people care about a few harmless lies anyway.
