I don't remember the name of it, but the authors last name was zimms or Zimmerman or something like that. The cover had a picture of a sea monster that I think was just a giant angler fish. Think it took place in Australia because I'm pretty sure I remember aborigines who loved saying boomstick all the time and the plot involved a large finding of opal. They also used magnesium rods or something to light their way underwater. It was like a teen thriller, but I can't find it now.

The same author wrote something else about a pig or something, but I never read that one
