I used to be a pretty avid reader a few years ago when I was in Middle School, but I had a few emotionally heavy experiences that turned me off to it. Now that I'm out of school, and separated from that bureaucracy, I've decided to start reading again.

I came to this board and checked out the /lit/ starter kit, and saw that I had read most of the books. My question is; why were some of these substandard books selected?

Namely, Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, and Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby.

Are you kidding me? It's titillating, and for whatever reason, schools picked it up as a standard piece of reading, so every kid in the fucking country has read it.

Popular =/= Good.

The reason it sold so well when it was written is because people wanted to see how the other side lived. It was like a Twilight written 90 years ago.

I used to be an avid reader in school too. That was when I was reading the same books as qt then lolis and jailbait although I didn't think of them that way. I was more in love with them instead of just wanting to fuck them. But the books didn't help me so I gave up reading altogether.

this board is very much entry level, accept it.

a ten year old has no capacity for aesthetic appreciation, which is why it was a bad idea to stick fitzgerald in the american curriculum. but, as a child, you were incapable of absorbing gatsby properly, so i don't begrudge your stupid opinion.

siddhartha because orientalism. steppenwolfe is better.

It's not that it's entry level, it's that the books suggested for entry level are shit.

I read Gatsby when I was 17 because of a class assignment.

wow

the symbolism and languages is vague so it's poetic and open to interpretation.
to be fair, I never fully realised how try hard and gay it sounds until I heard tobey maguire's narration at the end.

i thought that was intentional. whatever his name is claims to be above judging others, but his deliberately flowery prose is just an assertion of superiority.

The Great Gatsby didn't sell well at all. It was a huge disappointment for Fitzgerald. Stop talking about things you know nothing about.

then you don't understand either po-mo ironic detachment in the first place.

i didn't say that was intentional as a "oh but it's justifiably gay!". don't be so defensive.

Tell us what you found substandard about those books.

wow, great thread. make some claims without backing them up, you'll fit in well here.
