Didn't really like the latter half of this. Nataka's plotline started out well, then declined and kinda took over the book.

It really resonated with me the first time I read it;
I think it sparked my love of reading tbh

Either this or Macbeth

Not a book, but might be my favorite piece of literature. Also really liked The Metamorphosis.

I've always loved the atmosphere built within this novella.

Miura's "He's leaving home". Atmosphere mostly.
It's a coming-of-age story of a young boy becoming a ZEN monk, written from the perspective of his father, starting with his birth and ending with him being trained to take over the temple of some chain-smoking nun. It's weird Miura is almost unknown in the west, he got the Akutagawa price in Japan.
