Why is it now the "cool thing" to hate on Aristotle?

Speaking of 2nd hander. She didn't understand philosophy for shit. She had this rants against Kant without understanding him. She read crime novels for shits and giggles.

Because most people only read his "physics" and since he got some big ideas wrong in there, they assume he's wrong about everything.

This ignores the fact that he made some mind-blowingly correct assertions in it (THIS MOTHERFUCKER FUCKING REASONED OUT THAT ANTARCTICA HAD TO EXIST. YOU KNOW WHY WE CALL IT ANTARCTICA TODAY? BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HE CALLED IT)

I don't believe many people read his Physics, his most read works are Politics, Nicomachean Ethics and Poetics

>> No.4175072

His most read work, as far as college-curriculum goes, it's definitely the Physics.

Then it's the Ethics and Politics in a tie for second

Well in law schools parts of his Politics and Nicomachean Ethics are read in the study of theory of law.

Poetics are still a mandatory read in many universites which have art/drama as subject and beginners in philosophy are more likely to read easier stuff first

I go to law school in Europe and I had to read a huge part of his Politics for my seminar.

I read his Politics and Ethics in some classes, the Poetics because I liked to pretend I was deep about literature and his Rethorics for my thesis. I think he's OK.

The Rethorics in particular fascinate me. You can use most of it to this day.

Seriously? I´m a European, currently finishing my Master´s in philosophy. I´ve read the Categories and large parts of Politics and N. Ethics for my courses, but I haven´t even heard of anyone reading his Physics.

I´d assume that reading Physics would be confined to advanced philosophy and/ or history of science courses.

I´m not the guy you responded to btw.

Well, partially, at least, because he's stigmatized as being anti-science. In his metaphysics he claimed both that we can only know the form of a thing through reason and that because of this we can never have knowledge of particular material things. Since science arrives at conclusions through empirical observation of the material world and not pure reason, there's an apparent tension between the two. On the other hand, I've heard thomists say that aristotle and modern science are in consonance with each other and they would probably know better than me.
