Yasushi Inoue is one of my favorite writers of all time, regardless of nationality. NYRB just reissued his classic Tun-Huang, it's definitely worth a read. Tanizaki and Mishima are both good, not great imo. I hear really good things about Oe and Dazai so I guess I'll have to check them out.

Kōbō Abe, a.k.a Japanese Kafka

Are his other novels actually any good? I read Kangaroo Notebook, and maybe its just me, but I didn't care for it at all. Tempted to get his older stuff, but if his work is all like that, I may not bother.

>> No.4148493

What about short stories? Best Japanese short stories?

>> No.4148508

who wrote Snow Country again? that book is damn-near perfectly rendered i swear

otherwise Basho (obviously), pre-2000 Murakami (I still honestly think The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles and Underground especially are two of the greatest, most acute texts published in the last fifty years), Mishima (obviously), and Tanizaki
