Strictly speaking it isn't comparableto manifesto. It's a pessimistic view of the history of the USA. The author writes extensively about the working class trying to rise up via various labor unions and the communist party. He also talks about McCarythism and how the us was terrified of communism during the 1940s-1950s.

In general, it's a history of the US from the viewpoint of victims (blacks, women, the poor, and the working class)

To be fair, it is the "people's" history. Zinn did participate in the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam War protest. And besides, its those issue that affects our lives today more than some war that happens years ago.

It's a good book that points out the hypocrisy of the U.S. A critical view of U.S. history should be taught instead of the flower and roses that the children learns.

Fucking hell, she's terrible at that, rather than giving her philosophy through a story she just gets character and puts them into situations where they can spill her philosophy. Like Galt's speech, he goes on the radio and there's a really long monologue. She does this a few times with different characters and situations it gets annoying but not too bad and I didn't read it, I listend to an audiobook of it.

What you described reminds me slightly of Stranger in a Strange Land. Except Heinlein had the decency and skill to pull his pontification off in both story and speeches.

It takes a lot of Victorian-era tropes and deconstructs them to a certain degree, or uses them for humorous metacommentary.

There are a lot of protagonists.

On one hand it's a dive into obsession and faith and metaphysics, on the other hand it's a story about the struggle between oppressor and oppressed (most prominently, between capitalist industrialists and pretty much everybody else). Plus: revenge, loss of direction and meaning in life, Victorian-era adventurism, surrealism, etc.

It's a great book.

I'm not even from the US, but that book taught me how to consider history from many point of view. Also it teached me a lot about civil disobedience. This way I found out something more about the history of my country, and the origin of poverty in my region.

Also, while saying that it is the communist manifesto is fun, I don't think Zinn pushes communism at all. Zinn was realistic, he knew that an ideal society is impossible and people will always have to unite and fight the stronger in order to gain a free and better life.
