Recent BA English graduate here.

I am not well versed in grammar and syntax in the least. This is expected of me.

What are good sources for learning the niggling little details of rules for English? Chomsky?

What school did you go to? Turnpike Tech?

not op or even an english major, but what classes in college even cover that stuff? isn't that the kind of thing you're expected to know going IN to college (not an insult, op, as most people don't)?

They're called English classes.

Possibly. I was in a religious high school, so most of the classes were watered down with Christian rhetoric. When I got to university, there were too many topical subject requirements, which I guess meant that grammar or syntax studies didn't get a spot. All that's a long way of saying I was too lazy to do it myself, or I didn't bother, because I've been relatively unambitious.

My marks were good throughout my university writings, so I figured I could rely on whatever intuitive sense of things I had. I'd like to get more precise in editing, and eventually have my thoughts more organized, if possible. It was pretty liberal though, so the need to study diverse literature studies drowned out other types of English classes, I think.

Linguistics major here,

Get pic related OP, it's super accessible and comprehensive w/r/t syntax and grammar.

Your college-level English classes taught grammar? Mine just taught textual analysis and forms of essay writing. Grammar was expected, like the anon said.

I'm in an upper level class right now called modern grammar.

So you knew what X Bar theory is and how it works beforehand did you?

Pro-tip: that isn't the kind of "grammar" OP is talking about.

Thanks, I'll pick it up.

The closest I saw at my university would have been philosophy courses on symbolic logic.

Same here. It's called an English degree, but it's basically an English literature degree. That doesn't mean people don't expect it from me now though.

I had linguistics in high school, yes. Is that incredibly uncommon?

You don't need to know the difference between inflectional phrases and small clauses to study novels, so you're full of shit if you claim that syntax and grammar are required for and English degree.

Well, it's a dark 'l'; in a lot of accents it's easy to just eat it.
