Thoughts on Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh?

What did you like about it?

What didn't you like about it?

>> No.4102144

A thot it wis a canny book ken, likesay how he writ it in edinburgherese ken

Nah it wasn't bad.

Ai, a ken what ye say Spud, a really do, but what faults, if any likesay, did ye think the book had?

The only thing that irked me was that you couldn't tell which character was narrating which chapter until you got used to how each of them spoke.

Apart from that I enjoyed for what it was worth. One of the few books I've laughed aloud at.

I agree, I struggled with that at first, and I'm also having a hard time keeping track of some of the characters (I'm 3/4 of the way through).

Also yeah it's hilarious, and I love of how natural the Scots/Edinburgh dialect becomes after a while.

Anybody know of any other books written like this, in a regional accent?

I know Forrest Gump is kinda similar, although it's from the perspective of a mentally retarded guy

>> No.4102201

I doubt the narrative technique (i.e. jumping from story to story without apparent links) would have worked if it wasn't for the subject matter and style of writing.

Loved it, I thought it was great. I think some people fail to realize that its about the junkies more then the drugs they take.

This is a letter I wrote to my British friend for his birthday.

Christ that's an awful mishmash of accents.

>> No.4102230

One of my favourite books and authors when I read it back in high school. Of course at the time I was big into drugs myself. I'm gonna read Snag Boys after I finish Ulysses for some nice easy reading. Personally never had trouble with the written Scots, actually found it quite charming. Not even close to being Scottish myself unless you consider being Nova Scotian as being close to Scottish, though I admit there are some parallels. Captcha is atcyls Edinburgh, that shit definitely reads the threads and makes its captcha based off it.

>> No.4102237

Thoroughly enjoyed the language and humour of it.

Think he fucked it up by giving Rents hope in the end.

>> No.4102248

>>4102237
No that was the perfect conclusion. Renton had been getting better over the course of the whole book, and it was the great way out. Enough money to get him out of Edinburgh, and a reason to never return home, both of which he desperately wanted.

You're telling me my subjective opinion of the book is objectively wrong?

Right.

Yes, and I provided reason for it.

It seemed clever and literary and edgy and rank and gritty and all, but I couldn't be arsed to keep working through the phonetic brogue. It didn't seem worthwhile.

>X is stupid
>No its not, here is an explained reason as to why its not.
>OPINIONS

You are entitled to your subjective opinion, but your opinion is objectively weak and ill formed.

>> No.4102312

>>4102288

I didn't give my reasons for holding that opinion. You'd have to know what they were before you could say it was ill-formed.

ScottishCunt here, (Glasgow, not edinburgh do different dialect) and I love this book. Just finished Filth by Irvine Welsh last night and it was amazing, thoroughly recommend it to anyone

>> No.4102326

My main problem was Renton's pc piety.
Awfully white knight for a junkie.

>> No.4102335

>>4102326

I thought so too. Then again, I can see why Welsh portrayed Renton the way he did; it's probably better to have at least a somewhat strong moral contrast to full-on psychopaths like Begbie.

Have you read Porno yet? It's a gas.

I think that's more to do with your perceptions/ stereotypes about drug addicts rather than the actual nature of drug addicts

They're still people with a conscience/views of their own etc

I found Renton's portrayal struck many chords with my own experience

Source- Was a heroin addict for 7 years

Haven't read it yet. Glue is next on my list, have you read that?

Should I attend? Never read anything by him, but maybe it'll be interesting?

Truly, anything spawning the abominable films Trainspotting and Acid House must be shit.

>>4102213
More like a perfect pandering.
