How do I create a story that people will like? In fact, what do people like in novels (general) anyway?

Also. What would you like to see happen more in literature?

look at society and ask yourself... what does [targeted demographic] want themselves to be... what does [targeted demographic] hate? Then make the protagonist the former and the antagonist the latter and make the setting either where [targeted demographic] spends life or where [targeted demographic] wants to be, and then have good prose and a universal theme of human nature. You're set!

>"You'll never take me alive, Deputy Ice Cold Coca Cola Drink!" snarled the evil Male Rights Activist. "That's what YOU think" smirked DICC-CD, shooting him between the eyes. It was a good day to be a space cowboy and it got him thinking - 'life should be enjoyed while you're alive'.

Good novels invest the reader in what's going on, and keep them immersed all the way through. There have been countless best-sellers out there with terrible prose, but well-formulated characters and conflict. I think that's what differentiates novels from other genres: it's much more about form than style or function.

>Also. What would you like to see happen more in literature?

I want you to revitalize speculative fiction and usher in a new era of sci fi.

Novels are for the everyman, remember.

Good != popular.

Examine all the best sellers, see what they're doing, what they have in common.

I think it's a problem when cola is cheaper than water.

The 6 foot tall muscled man, tall and dark and handsome, was sat on the bus, enduring another daily grind, when up to him came a person calling them a faggot. "Faggot!" he yelled, the cry was high and loud. The tall man stood up. "By the justice of atheism and science I will destroy you." And threw him out of the bus. The yearning for justice is in each and every one of us, but for some it is stronger than others.

No, it's a virtue of capitalism. I can walk into any Country Fair and buy 20 oz of Cocoa Cola (or Pepsi for my kids) for 00.79 american dollars. Then instead of buying bread I can sate my hunger with cheap electronics or a DvD from the bargain bin.

You should write a book about a young refugee family fleeing their home to a terraformed planet but only touch on the politics and science and shit from the context of the family's perspective. Make it just about the characters. People love character pieces.

I like stories that don't really have much to them. I very straight forward simple story that keeps me interested either by the characters or the author's prose. You can write about virtually anything and it could be interesting or awful. I guess it matters most about how you put what you are trying to say.

I'm not expecting a short and simple explanation or some magic formula, just some good guides or books on the subject. I'm aware that being able to write good fiction is a long process that requires effort.

Here, two polar opposites:

The Art of Fiction, John Gardner (for understanding "aesthetics")
The Anatomy of Story Telling (google it, idk the author; this is as formulaic as it gets)

I'd like to read more stories where there isn't a forced romance. I don't like reading any romantic relationship bullshits in stories. I prefer to read about father/son dynamics or the relationships between brothers. Just man stuff ya know. Nothing gay just family feelings.

I'd like to read a good treatment of the modern man. Fuck adultery. Fuck sensational crime. Fuck sassy females or potheads. Fuck scifi that has not happened yet. I want a story about the modern man who is well-read, knowledgeable about philosophy and science, acutely aware of the obvious lies behind institutionalized religions and corporatist capitalism.

I want a novel that will speak across our fragmented culture and inspire humanity during this era of decadent, self-centered, escapist literature.
