It was in Corinth that a meeting between Alexander the Great and Diogenes is supposed to have taken place. The accounts of Plutarch and Diogenes Laërtius recount that they exchanged only a few words: while Diogenes was relaxing in the sunlight in the morning, Alexander, thrilled to meet the famous philosopher, asked if there was any favour he might do for him. Diogenes replied, "Yes, stand out of my sunlight". Alexander then declared, "If I were not Alexander, then I should wish to be Diogenes.", to which Diogenes replied "If I were not Diogenes, I should also wish to be Diogenes." In another account of the conversation, Alexander found the philosopher looking attentively at a pile of human bones. Diogenes explained, "I am searching for the bones of your father but cannot distinguish them from those of a slave."

That's what they are, though real life Diogenes was probably a pretty based guy. People have trouble appreciating basedness without the appropriate amount of wittiness, that's why we have those anecdotes.

Yes, the guy is hilarious. There's the one story about how he was caught masturbating in public and he said "If only it were as easy to banish hunger by rubbing the belly as it is to masturbate." The guy was a genius at defying social norms, even in a society with weird ass social norms like Athens

I'm probably mostly Epicurean in lifestyle since I practice frugality and simplicity without being truly ascetic, but I'm more of a recluse than a communal living type and don't buy the rest of his worldview. I'm more Pyrrhonist and Cynic in my views. I also like the angry Daoism of Heraclitus and the Aristippus anecdotes but the Stoics are too dogmatic for me, although I really like Epictetus.

I generally don't try to define it too much and just read and practice and experiment and try to assimilate the parts that I like, which probably makes me an eclectic in a semi-quietist way since I don't put too much trouble into glueing it all together into a comprehensible system.
