the only part about a college course that is actually useful is the fact that you can listen to somebody more informed than you discuss a subject you're interested in, which is often minimized unfortunately
the actual course work is something that you could just as effectively do on your own

OP, what you don't get is the following.

1. everybody who make philosophical claims here knows they know nothing.
2. If you know nothing, you are stupid.
2.1 even if you only pretend to know nothing, but secretly know nothing; your argument in itself, would still stand explicitly as stupid to an observer.
3. By one and 2 amended by two point 1 all making philosophical claims here are stupid.

Did you really have to take a course to see this?

I know little about philosophy but I have been asking myself questions recently that are philosophical in nature which I can't answer or am even sure can.

I always hear "start with the Greeks" or "start with Plato" so I might pick the republic, but with no guarantee that I'll find the answers that I'm looking for.

Start by working out which particular AREA of philosophy you are interested, e.g. ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, politics, and so on. Then you can get started.

>> No.4087427

>>4087376
Ok, let's go into the premises you call baseless:

The first premise is that every one with a basic grasp of philosophy knows "the only thing i know, is that I know nothing, lol" and holds this as true in some sense or another. And every /lit/erary who debates philosophy knows this

The second is that one way of being stupid is being ignorant. Since lack of knowledge might lead to stunted deduction ie. not knowing right from wrong, good from bad etc.

The premise of the amendment of second premise is, that even if the stupidity is under pretense the utterance made will still standing alone be considered stupid, because it has come from someone speaking under the influence of the first premise.

I don't see why you can't see this.

I actually try to avoid philosophical discourse these days.

I know I'm not intellectually qualified or well learned enough to do so, and so I don't. It's also an absolute bother, listening to people adamantly and steadfastly professing to ideas and beliefs without any consideration to the obvious logical flaws.

I just shrug a lot.
